Hey, Wit!
September is here, which means Q3 is winding down and Q4 is waiting just around the corner.
This is a good time to pause and ask: Am I still headed where I want to go?
Not where you said you would go six months ago. Not where you think you should go.
But where do you actually want to go now?
In a story, the Hero’s path often changes when they learn more about the world—and themselves. The goal they started with may no longer be the goal that matters most.
The same thing happens to us. Over and over again.
Sometimes the goal is still right, but the pace needs to change. Maybe you need to step it up.
Maybe you need a smaller, clearer milestone.
Maybe the goal was based on an old version of you and needs to be rewritten.
That isn’t failure.
That’s information.
A goal is supposed to serve your life—not become a tiny tyrant sitting on your shoulder, shouting about your word count.
Socrates said, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” I’m not sure I’d go that far, but I do think the unexamined life is boring, never elevates you, and robs you of becoming who you had the potential to be.

Try This: The Goal Pivot
Choose one goal you set earlier this year and answer:
- Do I still want this?
- Is the goal realistic for the time and energy I actually have?
- Should I accelerate, adjust, postpone, or release it?
- What would make completing this feel meaningful—not merely impressive?
Then write one revised goal for the rest of the year.
Make it specific enough to act on and flexible enough to survive being human.

As for me, I’m reminding myself that changing the plan doesn’t mean abandoning the story, because sometimes that's how the Hero gets back on the right path.
Happy writing!
